How to stop tattoo no-shows
Short answer: take a deposit for every booking, write a clear cancellation policy the client accepts, and send a reminder 24–48 hours before with an easy way to cancel or move. Most studios cut no-shows by more than half.
Why clients do not show up
- They booked on impulse and nothing was at stake.
- They forgot the date – the booking was weeks ago.
- They wanted to cancel but it felt awkward to call.
- They were not sure about the design or the price.
The four things that work
1
Deposit for every booking
A deposit (often $50–$150, or 20–30 % of a large piece) turns a “maybe” into a commitment. Take it online when the client books, and take it off the final price.
2
A policy the client accepts
Say how late they can cancel or move (for example 48 hours), what happens to the deposit, and how often a deposit can be moved. The client ticks “I accept” when booking.
3
Reminders
An email 24–48 hours before with the date, address, how to prepare and a link to cancel or move. A link is easier than a call – you get the slot back in time.
4
Consent form before the day
Clients who filled in their consent and health form at home are committed – and the session starts on time.
What to write in your policy
| Topic | Example |
|---|---|
| Deposit | Deposits hold your appointment and are taken off the final price. They are non-refundable. |
| Moving | You can move your appointment once with at least 48 hours notice and keep your deposit. |
| Late cancellation | Cancellations less than 48 hours before lose the deposit. |
| No-show | If you miss your appointment without telling us, the deposit is kept and a new booking needs a new deposit. |
Track it
Count your no-shows and kept deposits every month. If one artist or one service has many more, the deposit for it is probably too low – or the booking comes from a source that does not convert.
How GITECHY INK helps
Online booking takes the deposit with your own Stripe or PayPal, the client accepts your policies, reminders go out by themselves with the consent form link, and a no-show keeps the deposit in one click. The studio dashboard shows no-shows and kept deposits every month.
Questions
How big should a tattoo deposit be?
Enough that it hurts to lose: usually $50–$100 for small pieces and 20–30 % or a day rate for large work. It is taken off the final price.
Should I refund deposits?
Most studios do not refund deposits but let clients move once with enough notice. Whatever you choose, write it down and have the client accept it when booking.
