Piercing consent for minors: what studios need
Short answer: in most US states a minor can only be pierced with a parent or legal guardian present, who shows ID, proves the relationship and signs the consent. Many studios also set their own youngest age and do not pierce some places on minors at all.
What to check
- The parent or legal guardian is there in person (not a sibling or friend).
- Photo ID of the parent or guardian – and the minor’s date of birth.
- Proof of the relationship when names differ (birth certificate or court papers), if your state asks for it.
- The parent or guardian reads the health questions and the consent with the minor and signs.
- The placement is allowed for minors in your state and by your own studio rules.
Studio rules worth writing down
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| Youngest age | Ear lobes from 12, other piercings from 16 with a parent. |
| Not on minors | Nipple, genital and some facial piercings are not done on minors. |
| Tattoos | Adults only (18+) – most states do not allow tattoos on minors at all. |
Keep the record
Keep the signed form, the copy or photo of the ID and the session record together for as long as your health department asks.
How GITECHY INK helps
Minors can be allowed for piercings only, from the age you choose. The form then asks for the parent or guardian: name, relationship, date of birth (must be an adult), ID photo, their own confirmation and signature. Tattoos, permanent makeup and tooth gems stay adults only.
Questions
Can a parent sign by email?
In most states no – the parent or guardian must be present. Check your state and county rules.
Is this legal advice?
No. Rules differ by state and county; ask your health department or an attorney.
